Pavement Markings

Pavement markings on asphalt are usually not tracked or inventoried as part of a pavement management program.  This asset is critical as it provides guidance and safety to all who use paved roads, trails and parking lots.  Like any other asset, this asset deteriorates over time and it is best practice for any agency to keep track of the inventory and condition.

The best way to to inventory this asset is to save all design files.  Most of the design drawings have useful information such as the type, width, location, etc.  It is common that this information is hard to retrieve and warrants a field inventory.  To inventory this asset can be very challenging using handheld units.  AMS uses lidar to capture pavement markings.  Our lidar technology scans over 700,000 points a second.  With some changes to the intensity, we can capture the pavement markings in detail.  The detail allows for our specialists to bring this into a GIS environment and perform measurements, track the location, and even look at the conditions. To draw in pavement markings can be very challenging for larger agencies, but AMS leverages innovative technology such as AI to help draw in centerline, lanes, as well as text and other marking features.
